Types of Leads and Collars for Show Dogs

When it comes to presenting show dogs, every detail matters. From their impeccable grooming to their breed-specific gait, every aspect contributes to their overall presentation. Among the essential tools in a show dog handler's arsenal are show leads and collars. These accessories serve important and practical purposes when it comes to gaiting, stacking, free baiting, and even the final presentation of your dog’s grooming. In this blog post, we will explore different types of leads and collars available for show dogs, helping you choose the best options for yourdog.

Please keep in mind that these very specialized leads and collars are meant for use in the show ring only - we also have a great selection of walking and training leads & collars here.

Types of Leads

Most leads come in a wide range of colors and patterns, so that you can choose based on your dog’s color or your personal preference. Similarly, you can also choose the length and thickness of the lead based on your dog’s size and height.

Loop Leads

Loops leads have a loop on both ends; one end with a larger loop meant to be a handle, and the other end with a smaller loop meant to attach to a show collar. The collar is attached by inserting the small end through the metal loop of a show collar, and then threading the handle end of the lead through the small loop of the lead, and tightening. Loop leads are typically made of sturdy materials like nylon. They offer a comfortable grip and excellent durability.

Snap Leads

Snap leads have a handle on one end, and a metal or similar snap fastener on the other end. The snap or clip attaches to the loop of the dog’s show collar. Snap leads may be more cumbersome than a loop lead and also introduce more room for error as you could accidentally unclip your dog’s lead and collar.

Slide Clip Leads

One of the most popular leads out there, especially for puppies and training, is the Resco Slide Clip Leads. Slide clip leads have a small hole at one end for the handle, and a much larger hole at the other end with a sliding clip fastener to have an all-in-one lead and collar. Use the clip to adjust the collar to the exact size collar needed for your dog. For most dogs, especially puppies and unruly dogs, the thicker slide clip leads offer a great amount of gentle control. These leads are typically made of nylon.

Slide Clip Martingale Leads

If you would like the benefits of a slide clip lead but want to use the martingale collar, here is your option!Slide clip martingale leads have a small hole at one end for the handle, and a martingale collar at the other end with a sliding clip fastener to have an all-in-one lead and martingale collar. Use the clip to adjust the collar to the exact size collar needed for your dog. For most dogs, especially puppies and unruly dogs, the thicker slide clip leads offer a great amount of gentle control. These leads are typically made of nylon.

Slip Leads

Slip leads are notas commonly used for show dogs, but they are anotheroption. They consist of a loop that tightens around the dog's neck when pulled, providing gentle control, and typically have a ‘stopper’ that stops the collar from getting too large and allowing your dog to escape. Slip leads for the show ring are typically much thinner than a “walking slip lead” you would use outside of the show ring. Slip leads are lightweight and easy to grip but are best used for experienced handlers and trained show dogs.

Swivel/Spinner Leads

Swivel or Spinner leads are often a lead similar to Resco slide clip and martingale leads. They have a unique fastener that can spin 360*. These leads are a good option among very small dogs, puppies, or any dog that spins more than they should as it prevents the lead from getting twisted up.

Custom Leads

They are typically made of high-quality materials, such as leather or nylon, and come in various lengths and styles. These custom leads may be braided, such as common “Kangaroo leads”. Custom leads are often embellished with jewels and beads;however, these can be a bit cumbersome, especially for the new handler. You may be able to get a custom lead as a snap lead, loop lead, or even other lead types.

Types of Collars

Slip Chains

Slip collars have a metal ring of equal size on both ends of the collar. Slip chains are made of metal chains. This might be...

  • Curved link: the most popular type of chain, this is the default for most dogs.
  • Snake chain: a very specialized type of chain, best used for very experienced dogs and handlers. Not ideal for heavily-coated or double-coated dogs as it is prone to getting stuck in the coat.
  • Flat link: typically a heavier chain meant for very large and willful dogs.

A slip chain is attached to a snap or loop lead. Typically, the collar is put on in a ‘P’ shape.

Champagne Chain Collar

Nylon/Cloth Slip Collars

Another variation of slip collars is a collar made of nylon or chain. These slip collars also have a metal ring of equal size on each end of the collar. A nylon or cloth slip collar is attached to a snap or loop lead. Typically, the collar is put on in a ‘P’ shape.

Martingale Collars

Martingale collarsare designed to providea little extra control that prevents your dog from slipping out of the collar. These collars are popular for dogs that pull too hard into their lead, or which you would like them to pull ahead, with the added comfort of the martingale. These collars are a good option for inexperienced handlers.
